“You should not undertake a special journey to visit any place other than the following three Masjids with the expectations of getting greater reward: the Sacred Masjid of Makkah (Ka’bah), this Masjid of mine (the Prophet’s Masjid in Madinah), and Masjid Al-Aqsa (of Jerusalem)” – Hadith of Prophet Mohammed – Peace & Blessings be upon him (PBUH)
Being a Muslim couple it seemed apt to start our overland journey with a visit to all three of the holiest sites of Islam. The road to the masjids (mosques) of Makkah, Madinah and Jerusalem took us through these East African countries: Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia and Sudan.
We spent time exploring the cultures, religions, people, history and geography of these countries.
We then crossed the Red Sea into Jeddah, performed Umrah, visited Prophet’s (PBUH) mosque in Madinah, traveled to Jordan and drove to Jerusalem to spend the month of Ramadan there.
